@Jon
We intend to allow you to permanently turn off the phonetic typing, but we haven't gotten to it yet. In the meantime, feel free to ignore the feature. If you type in the script the phonetic typing would normally generate, it will simply ignore your typing.
I hate Google Translate because, no matter how many times I change my settings, I cannot turn it off! It continuously makes my primary language Spanish or French, ignores the button "Never Translate on this site" or whatever that is. There is no way to turn it off! The message continues to pop up no matter what I do. Now THAT's an update that is needed!
My God this is SO COMPLETELY annoying. And APPALLING!!! Are you UNABLE leave a perfectly good app. alone. With the previous version I was able to directly transcribe translated text into my work. Now differing fonts, font sizes and audible options are all creating complete havoc for me!! I am appalled at the cavalier approach you have to your users. Somebody defines his reason for existence by causing such upheaval, and no doubt is congratulated to boot. How about giving us the option to use the old Google translator, which worked so well??? And a tutorial to show us how to switch back. Like many things these days, a bad idea, poorly concieved and poorly executed. And there is NOTHING I can do except write this diatribe!! Thanks a LOT !!! Have a good day!!!
O My God... Again good news. What's going on with Google? New layout of Translate service is less useful than previous, obviously. Well, I very glad to see new features in many Google services. I think Google give us more and more useful stuff each day, and I can say "thanks" only. But I would wish that users will have a possibility to fallback some new features. For example, this phonetic translator... it's very inconvenient for my (I'm speak on russian). Next, new look of Google Translate service... Oh, guys, IT'S VERY BAD, seriously. I don't like when I see many not needed info on web page. Please, tell me can I revert back to classic appearance? (I still sence that No, thus I will use UserStyles anyway.) Thanks
Can you please decrease the translated font size? It's too large when reading long translations, it was much better before. Make it the same as the input text or at the same size as before.
Also the page is always jumping to the top for me when viewing long translations.
"Actually, none of the scripting is working. This new version is totally useless again. Can you all rollback or give us access to a "classic" version?"
She's Right !!!
PLEASE rollback all or give us access to a "classic" version?"
I live in china but don't read chinese. I can speak it to a certain extent, but the only way I can clearly communicate with chinese people is via instant messenger. they type in chinese, and I use google translate not to get the english (which it doesn't do well for anything but individual words) but to get the romanization so I know how to SAY the words and therefore can glean the meaning.
The "show romanization" button is incredibly important to anyone going between english and chinese. for the love of all things right in this world, please do one of the following:
-bring back the "show romanization button." -abandon this attempt to fix that which isn't broken. -give a link to the previous version.
@jestelle: for those of us who don't like the new "feel and look" of translate.google.com, please please, give us a link to the old classic translator, which was working perfectly fine. Now its a mess for IE, Firefox, Opera and other web browsers, works decent on Chrome, but not everyone uses Chrome.
Are there any plans for future versions of google translate to allow us to select the formality of translation.. ie tu/vous du/Sie .. translating from english into languages with formality seems to always translate formally, whereas often informal version is required..
also any plans to let us chose from a drop down list of words, or let us decide if a word is a verb or a noun etc.. google translate doesn't always get these things right, and a bit of a helping hand could improve translation quality greatly.. thanks, mango.
I use Google Translate for Japanese all the time, and it's kind of useless when the romaji isn't there under the kanji. I want the old version back. .__.
This is a good service. But it's the default language has been wrong. Taiwan use Traditional Chinese, not Simplified Chinese. This issue has occurred more than a year. I notice before. But Google has been to ignore it.
The text-to-voice functions is not working for me anymore! IMHO this was a very important feature that made the diference when compared with other translators.
I'm using firefox 3.5
I do agree with other users --please provide a link to the classic versions until the flaws of the new version are solved.
hi, I love Google Translate, but it seemed that your new application like Gmail translation is violating my pending-patent! I ever tried to contact with your translating team to develop this tool in Apr 2010, but no one gived me a feedback including your Google Venture. I have another pending-patent still need your Google Translate, please contact me.

love Google Translate, made working with Taiwan & China much easier. Several of my colleagues were using a translation software on their computer, but also sending Simplified Chinese as well. I got far better translations by converting their original text than by trying to decipher their original conversion.
I have been using google translate frequently but recently, i found out that the new google translate do not have the romanization options for chinese, japanese and korean languages anymore!!!!
Why does google tend to remove useful features when adding new versions ??!!
I often poaste long texts, 3 or 4 pages worth, into the translator interface for translation.
This caused a problem with the old interface where the text would show below in a frame with a scroll bar and portions of the text would be invisible to me, off screen or otherwise hidden in the page in some way.
Now, with the new interface, I get to see the page jump all over the place as I try to select the translated text for copying. I think this also has something to do with this framed scroll bar area.
I find the new interface unusable and absolutely frustrating. Anyone who wants to see this issue, simply paste in a few pages, translate it, and try to select one of the translated paragraphs. I should say "good luck" as you will probably give up before being able to do it.
This wil only happen if you are using chrome and also have the Google Translate extension working, so it is related to those complaints, too. Because I can't turn the extension off, I am stuck with this behavior.
Never change a winning team - and so never do with a winning app! The new design of google translate is a mess. Especially the horizontal instead of the formerly vertical orientation of the text boxes. Like me, lot of people use this tool while having other sites open, like chat tools (messengers). Translstor now needs nearly the complete width of the screen to display the translated text. This is annoying! Turn back immediately!
... furthermore the whole design and aligning of the buttons is unprofessional. What are the boxes good for? When I hit the language buttons, the frame turns from dark grey to black to show 'active' - apart from the translate button. The translation button has a different height - why? Why there is a box around the original text but none around the translated text? Seems this was the work of an absoulute beginner in front end design. What happens to Google???
>> SHOULD make translating text, webpages and documents on Google Translate even easier << [my emphasis]
Should... but doesn't. On the one hand I do admire Google's ever-readiness to re-examine what it does; on the other, it is constantly doing what appears to have happened here: radically changing an interface overnight -- without any consultation, as far as I can see, with heavy users -- and in the process wiping out highly valued features.
What has happened to the "submit a better translation" feature? To those who have criticized Google Translate for the infelicity of some of its translations I have always been able to say: "Perhaps -- but Google is willing to learn: they allow you to submit your own suggested alternative translations to help them [or so I fondly imagined] to improve their service".
Alas, Google Translate now appears to have abandoned that commendable, and highly worthwhile (I would have thought), humility. WHY?
Typical of the new version is that it thinks (incorrectly punctuated and accented) "Como estas?" is a sentence worth headline attention.
If you will not leave well alone, please at least give those of us who were perfectly happy with the "old" version a link back to it.
Like other people said here, I think it should have the option for the old Google Translator like other programs do, because for me it was better than the new too.
And the pronounce button doesn't work here and it's so frustrating because I use it almost all the time.
¡¡¡GIVE ME A BREAK¡¡¡¡...this new version of google translator is horrible...Í´m an often user of your translator, so I´m completly agree with the other users comments before me....¡¡¡¡RETURN TO THE OLD VERSION PLEASE¡¡¡...or at least give us the chance to choose if we decide to stay on the new version or return to the old version, with a "rwturn to the old version" button.
Posted a reply to a romanization-related thread in your Help Forum, but the original post was from the 2nd and there was no reply from a Google rep yet. So if you don't see those... I need the romanization back for Chinese and Korean. I know there's a "read phonetically" option but I haven't seen it ever since the page changed. Which renders the Chinese translations completely useless for me... Are you guys working on a fix for that? Thanks.
New translater is way much worse than previous , first of all it`s trying to post translation before it`s actualy see what i want to translate , and choosing one translation , not allways changing to correct translation , vhen obviously translation is wrong. Another thing , on the old translator when i typed text with some mistakes it wont translate it , so i know where the mistakes is and can correct them. On the new one it will translate it by choosing closest meaning (mostly correct) but now i can`t check my grammar. (I use the translator on daily basis mostly to correct my grammar as im not english and now it is impossible in most cases) Today i translate 1 phrase and as i never meet it before i tryed to listen it, but it`s not working either. I was not going to register with Google , but new translator is really need improving and i register only to say that , Give the old 1 back as i dont see anything what is better in the new 1. And as i already translated a lot of text with old and new , i can say that quality of the translator is worse as well , i don`t know if it`s different on the other languages , but russian - english and english - russian need to be improved.
The listen button does not work no matter what you say. This is a very important feature for a translator. Quit telling us you fixed this and didn't. Some billion dollar company. Don't build any bridges, but if you do please tell me which ones they are.
The listen button does not work. Please go back to the old translation version. This was the main reason why I liked Google translate because you all have this option but ever since you all upgraded everything kinda stinks now since nothing seems to be working.
It seems everyone has the same opinion... The previous version was better, lighter, simpler... Besides all the comments, what is REALLY missing for me in the new version is the "Suggest a better translation" option. I used to contribute a lot with it, but now I suppose it wasn't even used by Google. Also, this new version is really heavy, crashes my Chrome navigator, makes everything slower etc... (is this because of the listening options? Why don't you set a button for making this optional?) Hoping that Google will improve (/rework... :-( ) the tool Thank you!!
A month ago i was using google translate and it was great. i liked it a lot and its accuracy was pretty good, but now!? it sucks!!! i speak fluent Russian and French, but now it's so bad! what happened? it's so inaccurate it's pointless! i liked using it to do quick research and translation, which saved TONS of time for me, but now it's completely useless.
if you're going to improve something - improve it don't make it worse.
I cant even try the new one. I have basic chrome on XP, no extensions and as soon as the google translate page appears my chrome hangs and says 'the following page (google translate) became unresponsive' kill?
Hi! Perhaps this is not a best place to ask, but main forum is down. What have you done with such a great web app? I'm at a deadlock and about an hour trying to find my translation history. And something is prompting that i'll fail. Plese return the old interface of Google Translate it was much more better.
Volunteers worldwide did a lot of work to populate the old Google Translate. Unfortunately, all this job was lost, not transferred to the new Translate. It is very frustrating to re-start, knowing that soon the tool will change again and the job will be again lost. It is something like with Wikipedia...
Please when I take the time to contribute to Google Translate with a better translation within your AJAX form... Apply my proposed text within your automated translated text!
It is VERY FRUSTRATING to take the time to propose a better sentence translation and then see it desapear when I click the "Submit" button.
If you want us to contribute in helping you to improve Google Translate you will need to improve this functionality. Give us the ability to copy our proposed translation within the context where it is used. In a simplified version : When the user click "Submit" in the "Contribute a better translation" form, inject our modified string within the "translation" strings of text.
... Me again about the "Contribute a better translation" form.
This form needs more than a single "Submit" button. Please follow my previously proposed AJAX injection of string AND add these 3 buttons:
1. Cancel 2. Apply 3. Submit and Apply
With these added options users will be able to use your "Contribute form" as a live text editor before copy/pasting the result in theire (local) application. The "Apply" button would give ous (users) the ability to read our proposed translation in the entire context before submitting it to Google's database.
Please consider my proposition. Is should help both you and the Google Translation.
Just wanted to check what is going on with adding "Serbian Latin" version to the list of languages? It's frustrating to have only "Serbian Cyrillic" in the list, and no one really uses it, and yet Google insists it's the only one. To remind Google, Serbian is on of the rare languages in the world that officially uses TWO scripts. So, having only one is kinda frustrating...
Google Translation Simplified Chinese always set to default, but users in Taiwan is not a local language that, resulting in convenient use.
In addition, the updated pages can not use the vertical translation pane, each time you use Google Translation need to switch windows, considerable trouble.
Hopefully the above two points can improve, or even in a good translation of the sentence, and will not use people to accept inconvenience
Please please PLEASE give the ability to turn off the "submit a better translation" pop-up. It is very annoying because it covers drop-down menus, making them unusable. I sometimes use it myself when I see a phrase that is obviously a bad translation, but the way it is currently designed means I can't use certain websites.
Something I always do when using a translator is to run the translation back through the other way, to help catch translation errors or idiomatic errors.
It would be useful if the tool could do this automatically for me.
google translator shows 53 languages which can translate web and word. but recently I install google translator which doesn't shows 53 lanhuages. It is showing less than 53 language. Can anyone give me a soluation how can I active all 53 languages. Thanks.
Google translate has not worked on my Mac since 29 September. When I use the automatic translator, or search for terms using language tools/ and click on additional languages/and click on the webpage I get a series of empty web pages appearing which say google translate at the top. Please can you have a look at this google team as I rely on this normally excellent service for my research! Many thanks.
Guess what? Another UNHAPPY user. The old Google translate page was AWESOME and SIMPLE. The new one is all sizzle and no steak. In other words, it sucks. Can we PLEASE have a link back to the old Google translate?
Also, think about it... for every one person that post here there are THOUSANDS of dissastisfied users. Check the hit count... I suspect a sharp decline in traffic since you rolled out the new version... I know I don't use it as much as I used to...
this is really funny, i tried to translate the word titration (English) to Filipino and it gives "pagsukat ng titi" which means "to measure a penis"...
Yeah, right... The phonnetical option reads with really bad accent, and in russian says a lot of words wrong. Why? Because Google Translate didn't change yet the word "e" to the "ë" (I wrote in latin symbol, not cyrillics, but they are equal in aspect). The First is red "ye" and the second "yo"; The second always tells which one is the stressed syllable. But no, if we are learning russian we must find a website which gots a tts technology so that we can listen to it properly and then change the letters.
I want a copy button so i can copy the translated text without the hassle of marking the tekst (which is difficut due to the "Original text .. contribute" popup).
Do you mean for everyone that looks up that phrase or just for you? If you mean just for yourself, that works fine. But if it was for everyone, then people could start vandalizing and providing false words.
Please, give us a way to permanently turn off the "Type phonetically" option.
ReplyDeleteCan't you all please leave well enough alone. The "swap" button does not work for me in Firefox 3.5
ReplyDeleteActually, none of the scripting is working. This new version is totally useless again. Can you all rollback or give us access to a "classic" version?

ReplyDeleteFollowing on from Google Search, YouTube, and Google Images, Google have now decided it's time to screw up Translate!

ReplyDeleteWhat have you done with such a great web app? I'm at a deadlock and about an hour trying to find my translation history. And something is prompting that i'll fail. Plese return the old interface of Google Translate it was much more better.
Volunteers worldwide did a lot of work to populate the old Google Translate. Unfortunately, all this job was lost, not transferred to the new Translate. It is very frustrating to re-start, knowing that soon the tool will change again and the job will be again lost.
ReplyDeleteIt is something like with Wikipedia...
Great tool thanks BUT... Contribution form sucks!
ReplyDeletePlease when I take the time to contribute to Google Translate with a better translation within your AJAX form...
ReplyDeleteThis form needs more than a single "Submit" button. Please follow my previously proposed AJAX injection of string AND add these 3 buttons:
1. Cancel
2. Apply
ReplyDeleteいちいちadobe flash playerのアドオンをインストールするように言ってくるのは、どうにかならないもんですか?
ReplyDeleteGoogle Translation Simplified Chinese always set to default, but users in Taiwan is not a local language that, resulting in convenient use.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, the updated pages can not use the vertical translation pane, each time you use Google Translation need to switch windows, considerable trouble.
Hopefully the above two points can improve, or even in a good translation of the sentence, and will not use people to accept inconvenience
>if you're going to improve something - improve it don't make it worse.
ReplyDeleteWell said, nikkitron. I absolutely agree.
I liked the button where the translated text is located (on the right side of the original text or underneath it || = )
ReplyDeleteCan we have this back, too please?
Esteban Aragon
Please please PLEASE give the ability to turn off the "submit a better translation" pop-up.
ReplyDeleteIt is very annoying because it covers drop-down menus, making them unusable. I sometimes use it myself when I see a phrase that is obviously a bad translation, but the way it is currently designed means I can't use certain websites.
Something I always do when using a translator is to run the translation back through the other way, to help catch translation errors or idiomatic errors.
ReplyDeleteIt would be useful if the tool could do this automatically for me.
Hiiii
ReplyDeleteHow can i put a link of GOOGLE TRANSLATOR in my blog, so that internationa visitors can translate?
Tkss!
Manoela
Google,
ReplyDeletePlease fix the errors or jump back to the old version!
The new Translate does not work correctly on webpage!
google translator shows 53 languages which can translate web and word. but recently I install google translator which doesn't shows 53 lanhuages. It is showing less than 53 language. Can anyone give me a soluation how can I active all 53 languages. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteGoogle translate has not worked on my Mac since 29 September. When I use the automatic translator, or search for terms using language tools/ and click on additional languages/and click on the webpage I get a series of empty web pages appearing which say google translate at the top. Please can you have a look at this google team as I rely on this normally excellent service for my research! Many thanks.
ReplyDeleteGuess what? Another UNHAPPY user. The old Google translate page was AWESOME and SIMPLE. The new one is all sizzle and no steak. In other words, it sucks. Can we PLEASE have a link back to the old Google translate?
ReplyDeleteAlso, think about it... for every one person that post here there are THOUSANDS of dissastisfied users. Check the hit count... I suspect a sharp decline in traffic since you rolled out the new version... I know I don't use it as much as I used to...
ReplyDeletethis is really funny, i tried to translate the word titration (English) to Filipino and it gives "pagsukat ng titi" which means "to measure a penis"...
ReplyDeleteYeah, right...
ReplyDeleteI want a copy button so i can copy the translated text without the hassle of marking the tekst (which is difficut due to the "Original text .. contribute" popup).
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeletemaybe you can make a function in google translate box like keyboard screen for google translte box, in my opinion that will help much :)
best regards
Why isn't Esperanto at least in Alpha? I don't think Latin has official recognition from the UN...
ReplyDelete@dub:
ReplyDeleteDo you mean for everyone that looks up that phrase or just for you? If you mean just for yourself, that works fine. But if it was for everyone, then people could start vandalizing and providing false words.
